Synopsis:

Eliza is forced into marriage with no idea her life will change for the better. Married less than a year, her unwilling rake of a husband is surprisingly kind to her—until his sudden death. The widowed Countess of Sunderland remains under her in-laws’ protection to raise her newborn daughter. But her abusive father is on the brink of financial ruin and has plans for another wedding.

Nathaniel, Viscount of Pendleton, gains his title at the age of 12. His kindly but shrewd estate manager becomes father and mentor, instilling in the boy an astute sense of responsibility and compassion for his tenants. Fifteen years later, his family urges him to visit London and seek a wife. The ideal doesn’t appeal to him, but his sense of duty tells him it is the next logical step.

Lord Pendleton stumbles upon Eliza on the road, defending an elderly woman against ruffians. After rescuing the exquisite damsel in distress, he finds himself smitten. But Nate soon realizes he must discover the dark secrets of her past to truly save the woman he loves.
A sweet Regency.

My Thoughts:

Eliza is forced by her father into marriage with no idea her life will change for the better. Married less than a year, her unwilling rake of a husband is suddenly dead in what appears to be an accident. As the widowed Countess of Sunderland she remains under her in-laws’ protection to raise her newborn daughter.

Two years later her abusive father is once more on the brink of financial ruin.
Now he has plans for another wedding for Eliza to a horrible older man.

Lord Pendleton stumbles upon Eliza on the road, defending an elderly woman against ruffians. After rescuing the pair of damsels in distress, he finds himself smitten with Eliza. Nate soon realizes he must discover the secrets of her past to truly save the woman he has come to love.

This is basically a sweet regency but with very villainous characters that wish the heroine harm. Eliza’s father is the chief villain in the scenario but his hired henchmen also play into the story.

With a sweet and precocious two year old and a wonderfully protective bloodhound thrown in for good measure this is a well written book that I thoroughly enjoyed.

I gave this story 4.5 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization. I received a complimentary ARC of this title from Hidden Gems to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this novella which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

Synopsis:

BONUS: 2nd epilogue included!

A grieving widower. A strong lady. And a little girl who needs them both.

After losing his wife in an accident, GRAHAM ASTOR, DUKE OF KENSINGTON, decides that love is not worth the risk of having his heart broken all over again. Even his little daughter he keeps at a distance, afraid to hurt her with the darkness that now lives in his heart. Since he is unable to be the father she deserves, he vows to find her a mother who will heal her little heart.

At a garden party, Graham spots a young woman with a shy smile tending lovingly to her little cousins…and he knows his duty.

As the black sheep of her family, ROSABEL LANDER has no illusions about love. After her parents’ deaths, her aunt and uncle reluctantly took her in, demanding nothing short of complete obedience. Unable to live down her past, Rosabel only wishes for one thing: freedom.

However, before she dares to take the first step toward an independent future, a cold-hearted stranger asks for her hand in marriage…and as the obedient niece, Rosabel cannot refuse.

Will Rosabel find love after all? Or will the memory of Graham’s late wife keep them both from finding happiness?

My Thoughts:

A grieving widower.

After losing his wife in an accident, GRAHAM ASTOR, DUKE OF KENSINGTON, decides that love is not worth the risk of having his heart broken all over again. Even his little daughter he keeps at a distance.

A strong lady.

As the black sheep of her family, ROSABEL LANDER has no illusions about love.

And a little girl who needs them both.

At a garden party, Graham spots a young woman with a shy smile tending lovingly to her little cousins…and he knows his duty.

Is everything as it appears on the surface or is there more to this heart wrenching tale?
Rosabel has come to love her charge as the little girl is not only inquisitive but very lonely and in need of love and attention. Her father more or less ignores her and her governess is far from affectionate or likable.

Finding the hidden secrets behind this story by accident Rosabel makes it her mission to love both father and daughter.

There are some intriguing and surprising secrets that even the letters and diaries that Rosabel uncovers do not reveal.
This is a must read for regency readers.
I gave this book 4.5 (rounded up to 5) of 5.0 stars for story line and character development.
