He never forgot her…

When General Collin Hunt is ordered to take a much-needed holiday, he resigns himself to rest and recreation at his brother’s country estate. But when the only woman he ever loved—and selflessly gave up—shows up as his sister-in-law’s governess, his carefully ordered life is turned inside out.

She’ll never forgive him…

When Erienne Stone defied her family and fled her life of privilege, she never expected to be reunited with the man who’d abandoned her more than a decade before. But Lucy, Duchess of Claringdon, is a hard woman to say no to, even when Erienne’s heart is in danger of breaking all over again.

A meddling matchmaker may be the key to their second chance…

After a decade of pain and heartache, can two star-crossed lovers trust the truth in their own hearts?

My Thoughts:

This is a Playful Brides Novella.
Valerie Bowman has yet to disappoint this reader with the books in this series. I have read and reviewed most of them beginning with an ARC of The Unlikely Lady which I reviewed in May of 2015. It was the third book in the series so I had missed out on books #1 & #2.
I haven’t missed another. This is a delightful series and I recommend reading them in order but they can each stand on their own. There are connecting characters however so if read out of order you can miss out on some key background characters.
This novella is a well written second chance romance with the infamous meddling matchmaker Lucy, Duchess of Claringdon playing a key roll.
I feel certain that you won’t be disappointed in this short read. Like most novellas I only wish it had been longer and more detailed.
I gave this book 4.85 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization. There is a little less intimacy in this one than some others in this series but it isn’t non-existent.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this title which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

Bound by tradition. Now they must follow the rules.

Companions are the kingdom’s most beautiful and educated women—possessions of Syrasan’s royal men. Aldara is sixteen years old when she is sold by her farming family to the obnoxious Prince Pandarus as a gift for his younger brother, Prince Tyron. Resistant at first, the new Companion soon realises she must embrace the role or face the consequences of her failure.

Prince Tyron has just returned from war. All he wants is privacy to grieve the men who died at the border. At his brother’s insistence, Tyron attends a social hunt where his Companion is introduced for the first time. He senses something beneath the polished exterior presented to him. She is not like the others.

While initial encounters between the troubled war hero and his reluctant Companion are awkward, their connection is immediate. But they are soon reminded by those closest to them that there is no place for love between a prince and his Companion.

Set amid grief and war, The Royal Companion is a heart-warming love story about what it means to give yourself over to another.

Warning: This book contains sexual violence, death and dark themes.

Please note: This is a revised edition. It is part one of Tyron and Aldara’s story. Their story continues in books two and three—available now.

The Marquess of Wesley is out for blood. For a year, Lord Wesley has tried to undo the devastation his father left to Penndrake, their ancestral home, only to discover the man gambled it away right before his death. Now Wesley is being blackmailed by the new owner into marrying a woman he’s never met in order to get it back. But his intentions are less than honorable…

At one and twenty, Miss Kate Holden intends to become a governess, having sworn off all men years ago. However, her plans are halted when she receives a daunting letter from her cousin about a Lord Wesley. Ignorant of the name, and the devilish marquess that wears it all too well, she nearly ends up compromised. Refusing to fall prey to Wesley’s skillful seduction, Kate decides to turn things around on the rake. But the high-stakes game between them soon leads to her losing the last thing she expected…her heart.

My Thoughts:

This is a new to me author. Her previous novels have been contemporaries so I had not read any of her books. She did, however publish one historical novella before writing this book and I went back and read that one. This book is her historical romance novel debut.

This is a delightfully funny book at times with the by play between our hero and heroine. It has an underlying Cinderella feel with the aunt and cousins who treat Kate like a servant.

Our hero, The Marquess of Wesley has a demanding attitude when it comes to Kate. He insists that she follow his dictates although this is most certainly not in her nature.
This couple is more argumentative than loving through most of the book and you wonder if this could possibly lead to a Happily Ever After.
I gave this book 4.5 of 5.0 stars for storyline and character development and a sensual rating of 3 of 5 flames. The intimacy is almost nonexistent but teases us to the very end with heated kisses.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley to read and review.
