Publisher’s Description:

Mystery and desire cloak the Scottish Highlands

Unruly. Unmarried. Unapologetic. Catriona Mackenzie’s reputation precedes her everywhere she goes. Her beloved late aunt Zelda taught Cat to live out loud and speak her mind, and that’s exactly what she does when Zelda’s legacy—a refuge for women in need—comes under fire. When her quest puts her in the path of the disturbingly mysterious Hamlin Graham, Duke of Montrose, Cat is soon caught up in the provocative rumors surrounding the dark duke. Never one to retreat, Cat boldly goes where no one else has dared for answers.

Shrouded in secrets, a hostage of lies, Hamlin must endure the fear and suspicion of those who believe he is a murderer. The sudden disappearance of his wife and the truth he keeps silent are a risk to his chances at earning a coveted parliamentary seat. But he’s kept his affairs tightly held until a woman with sparkling eyes and brazen determination appears unexpectedly in his life. Deadly allegations might be his downfall, but his unleashed passion could be the duke’s ultimate undoing.

My Thoughts:

Julia London’s books always draw me in. This one did too.
Before this book I had read only book #1 and Book #4 of this series. I don’t feel they need to be read in any particular order to be enjoyed. Each one can stand on it’s own.

We were introduced to Catriona Mackenzie in one of the other books of this series and I wondered who could possibly tame her. Will Hamlin, the Duke of Montrose be up to the task

Cat is in morning for her beloved Aunt Zelda when the crown decides to take possession of the abbey where she and Zelda had been sheltering unfortunate women and children.
This of course will not do for the outspoken Catriona.

This is a story of some very unsettling times in the highlands situated after the Battle of Culloden.
This time period makes up for most of my favorite Scottish Historical Romance reads, this one included.
This series is not to be missed. This one is one for my keeper shelf.

I gave this read 4.4 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 3.75 of 5.0 flames. The background story is what makes this a very readable romance.

I received a complimentary digital ARC of this title by invitation to read and review. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

This Series:

  1. Wild Wicked Scot
  2. Sinful Scottish laird
  3. Hard-Hearted Highlander
  4. Devil in Tartan
  5. Tempting The Laird

Publisher’s Description:

Two sisters. One disaster.

First things first: I’m the bad twin. While my sister, Marcia, has the perfect family in the perfect suburb, I’ve been making my living as an Internet advice columnist and designing Web sites in my downtown loft. I always thought I had the right answer – and hair color – for any occasion. That is, until Marcia ran up loads of debt and ran out on her husband and kids, and I was left helping to pick up the pieces. Her husband, James, is a lawyer who I hate on principle alone.

But for a guy who’s just lost his job, his marriage, and his expensive toys, he’s keeping it together – and making me rethink my feelings toward him. It’s not that he’s traded in his conservative suits for sexy jeans. It’s that he’s not giving up what’s important to him, and oh baby, I’m a sucker for a guy who hangs tough.

That doesn’t mean I’m ready to step into Marcia’s designer shoes now that she’s gone AWOL.

And it doesn’t mean I’m going to fall for James’s easy charm…not again, anyhow. Besides, I’ve had a lifelong policy of not being mistaken for my twin and I’m not backing down on that one now – no matter how convenient it might be for a certain sexy (and persuasive) man…

Each of the books in the Coxwell Series is a standalone novel.

Publisher’s Description:

More cherished than gold are the Jewels of Kinfairlie, and only the worthiest may fight for their love…The Laird of Kinfairlie has unmarried sisters, each a gem in her own right. And he has no choice but to see them all wed in haste.

Lady Madeline’s heart is not for sale…especially not to a notorious outlaw like Rhys FitzHenry. Yet Madeline’s hand has been sold, to none other than this battle-weary warrior with a price on his head. A more dutiful maiden might cede to the Laird’s command and meekly accept her fate, but Madeline has never been obedient. She decides to run away, though she never dreams that Rhys will pursue her. She does not expect this taciturn man to woo her with fanciful stories, much less that each of his enthralling tales will reveal a scar upon his shielded soul. She never imagines that a man like Rhys could imperil her own heart while revealing so little of his own feelings. When Rhys’s past threatens his future, Madeline takes a leap of faith. She dares to believe him innocent
— and risks her own life to pursue a passion more priceless than the rarest gem.

This version includes an excerpt from THE ROSE RED BRIDE.

Dear Reader:

Seductive and mysterious, Merlyn was the laird of Ravensmuir — never had a man so stirred my body and soul. I gave myself to him — willingly, trustingly, passionately — and we soon wed. Then a horrible revelation emerged, shattering my innocence and my marriage…

Five years later, Merlyn returned to my doorstep, desperate for my help. The scoundrel swore he was haunted by memories of me, that a treasure locked in Ravensmuir could clear his name. Yet I could not surrender to his will again. Now he is said to be murdered and Ravensmuir has fallen into my hands.

But even as I cross the threshold of this cursed keep, I hear his whisper in the darkness, feel his caress in the night, and I know that Merlyn has told me but part of his tale. Should I do as is right and expose his lair? Or dare I trust my alluring but deceptive spouse – the rogue who destroyed my heart?

My Thoughts:

Original Review Posted at Amazon: May 26, 2016

This book started out slowly for me. I do enjoy reading about the time period, but it just didn’t click for me until I was about 25% through the book. Then I really enjoyed the read.

I actually had this book in another format but because of a tablet that QUIT on me I had not read it. I did complete it after a very slow start and enjoyed the read. I gave this book a 3.25 of 5.0 star rating.
I would read another book by this author.

About The Author:

claire-delacroixDeborah Cooke AKA Claire Delacroix

Claire Delacroix is a pseudonym used by author Deborah Cooke for her historical romances.

This website includes all Claire Delacroix titles and is a subsidiary website.

Deborah’s main website lists all of Deborah’s published works and hosts her blog. You’ll find information about her contemporary romances, urban fantasy romances and paranormal romances there, as well as links to other subsidiary sites for her fictional worlds.

NYT bestselling author Claire Delacroix always loved stories, both telling them and hearing them. She sold her first romance novel – ROMANCE OF THE ROSE – in 1992 and has published over fifty romance novels since. She writes in a variety of subgenres, including time travel romance, historical romance, medieval romance, fantasy romance and fantasy with romantic elements. She has also written under the names Claire Cross and Deborah Cooke. She makes her home with her family, a number of incomplete knitting projects and a lot of overgrown houseplants. Claire loves to travel, to cook, to ride her bike and to read.

Claire is currently writing The Brides of Inverfyre series of medieval Scottish romances. She loves writing linked books and here they are in order:

The Bride Quest series of medieval romances:
1. The Princess – her first USAT bestseller
2. The Damsel – a USAT bestseller
3. The Heiress – a USAT bestseller
4. The Countess – a USAT bestseller

2. The Runaway Bride (October 2018)

The Champions of St. Euphemia is a medieval romance series that has no connection to Ravensmuir, Kinfairlie or Inverfyre. It follows a group of knights from Jerusalem to Scotland and should be read in order:
1. The Crusader’s Bride
2. The Crusader’s Heart
3. The Crusader’s Kiss
4. The Crusader’s Vow
5. The Crusader’s Handfast

Claire also published four stand-alone time travel or paranormal romances under the name Claire Cross. These have been republished as Claire Delacroix titles:
