Description Blurb:

This is a clean regency romance. No cheating, no cliffhangers, guaranteed HEA.

Closet romantic Miss Sarah Crombly has always believed in fairytale endings—though her dreams of a happily ever after are dashed with the news that her father has gambled away her hand in marriage to none other than James Foxworth, the Duke of Pillberton, her old childhood friend and now sworn enemy. Though he may be sinfully handsome, and a Duke to boot, Sarah vows to make sure she will never fall in love with him and devises a plan to escape.

James Foxworth has enjoyed a life filled with privilege as befitting of a man of his rank. From the best horseflesh to the finest clothes to more estates than he can count, the Duke of Pillberton wants for nothing. There is one thing he desires more than wealth or title, his childhood friend Sarah Crombly, and nothing will stop him.

Seeing an opportunity to set right old wrongs, James sets about winning Sarah’s hand in a game of chance, though he finds his prize more resistant to his idea of marriage than he had anticipated. When his wife-to-be disappears, James knows that he must find her and win both her trust and her heart.

How can James find a way back into the heart of the only woman he has ever loved? And how will Sarah find a way to forgive him and learn to love him once again?

My Thoughts:

This is my first time reading anything by this author who as it seems is rather new on the scene.

This was an interesting twist on an arranged marriage scenario.
Both hero and heroine had from the time of their youth been attracted to each other, yet our hero in particular had no idea how to show his affection. Instead James found ways to push Sarah away.

Now he’s back from his extended travels and no longer the impetuous youth. He now has a need to show the lady how much he loves her.
Instead he gambles with her father for her hand.

Sarah is too strong natured to simply accept this outcome.

How will their story end?

I gave this book by a new to me author 4.25 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization.
This regency era romp is very well written and I look forward to more books by this author.

I received a complimentary ARC of this book via Hidden Gems. This in no way affected my opinion of this title which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

Publisher’s Description:

Some secrets are hard to keep…
Jake promised Heather MacDonald he’d keep her secret. He’d help her train to be a warrior and all she had to do was give him a kiss. He didn’t promise that she wouldn’t feel the stirrings of desire for this former soldier.
For Heather, a woman determined to become a warrior, Jake’s promise means the difference between life and death.
Wounded at war, then the target of a malicious healer, Jake Duncan, brother of the
Highland Laird, has decided he has to prove himself, over and over again. He never thought that part of his journey would involve falling for the woman from the Lowlands who wasn’t as demure or as shy as he originally thought, especially not when she was wielding a dirk.
