Publisher’s Description:

He knew her round eyes and the deep shade of brown along with the band of black that encircled her irises. He knew the slope of her breasts, the indent of her waist, and the flare of her hips. He knew the way she preferred to wear muted colors to help her blend in with a crowd. It had taken one look to put all that to memory, but he found his eyes going to her again and again, as if he couldn’t get enough.

Nikolai is a dragon shapeshifter who knows well the meaning of loss. Orphaned and raised to be a Dragon King, he never accepts defeat. Now, Nikolai prefers his solitude. . .until a beautiful, irresistible woman calls upon him for help—and Nikolai’s whole world goes up in flames.

Ever since MI5 agent Esther woke to discover her mind taken over with magic, she feels like a stranger to herself. She looks to a notorious dragon, one who has the power to help her find her memory. But as she and Nikolai come closer to discovering what really happened to her, a dangerous passion ignites between them. Can this lone Dragon King help the woman he’s grown to love to uncover the truth about her past—or will a deep and fiery danger tear them both apart in Heat, the next Dark Kings novel by New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant.

My Thoughts:

“Heat” reads much better and with more ease than the other book I have read in this series, “Blaze”. I have read other titles by Ms. Grant but they were read several years ago as hardback and paperback titles when I read more paranormal type romance. Now my taste runs more toward Historical romance and Historical Fiction with some lighthearted contemporary romance thrown in for good measure.
Blaze was much too violent for my taste. This book was much more of the soul searching variety.
It is important that I have only read two books in a very long series, because this is book twelve.
This is not a book to be read as a standalone title. The reader could become lost with so many characters most of which were introduced and visited in prior books of the series.
I liked the underlying story of Nikolai and Esther, but thought the jumping back and forth from their story to the others in this book very distracting. Maybe that would not be the case if I had read the entire series from the beginning.
We have dragon shifters, light and dark fae, druids and other paranormal beings. Thankfully this book didn’t contain all of the violence the prior book did. It was a much easier read with the much milder violent nature.
I gave this book 4 of 5 stars for storyline and character development and a mild sensual rating of 3.5 of 5.0 flames. The intimacy is not overly descriptive but we can feel the heat between our hero and heroine.
I received a complimentary digital ARC by invitation, of this book to read and review. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

SYNOPSIS:

Bishop Nigel smiled at me. ‘Holy water doesn’t harm vampires. Which is just as well, as it would make it impossible to baptise them.’

When I was asked by a dragon to give him the last rites, I never dreamed it would lead to negotiating with his cannibalistic family or running from snail sharks. Life as the priest of a small English village is quite tame in comparison. At least I have Morey, a gryphon with sarcasm management issues, to help me. And if all else fails, there’s always red wine and single malt whisky.

As if my life weren’t complicated enough, a darkly beautiful dragon named Raven keeps appearing where I least expect him, I’ve met a handsome police inspector who loves science fiction as much as I do, and my younger brother is getting into trouble for trying to pick up vampires.

That’s what happens when you’re dealing with an incredible and dangerous parallel world full of mythical creatures.

And I have to learn to navigate it all without losing myself, or my brother…

‘This is a novel that everyone should read. It has so many layers; religion, humor, friendship, family, marriage, and social norms. Everyone can find something to love. I haven’t been able to stop talking about it! It’s original, refreshing, and delightful!’ ★★★★★  Readers’ Favorite

‘The world is richly penned with fully developed larger-than-life characters, a beautiful and believable world, and a premise that will tickle the fancy of anyone who loves a decent mystery wrapped in a shroud of fantasy. …A nearly flawless tale of a flawed woman doing her best with humor and faith, though not always with dignity, in a strange new world, this is one magical creation not to be missed!’  ★★★★ 1/2 InD’Tale Magazine

‘Fast, funny, and full of faith, this is the best fantasy series I have ever read!’ Melissa Storm, USA Today Bestselling Author

Synopsis:

THE FEUD
England, 1308. Boursier, De Arell, Verdun—three noblemen who secretly gather to ally against their treacherous lord. But though each is elevated to a baron in his own right and given a portion of his lord’s lands, jealousy and reprisal lead to a twenty-five year feud, pitting family against family, passing father to son.

THE DECREE
England, 1333. The chink in Baron Boursier’s armor is his fondness for a lovely face. When it costs him half his sight and brands him as one who abuses women, he vows to never again be “blinded” by beauty. Thus, given the choice between forfeiting his lands and wedding one of his enemies to end their feud, he chooses as his betrothed the lady said to be plain of face, rejecting the lady rumored to be most fair.

THE ENEMY
On the eve of the deadline to honor the king’s decree of marriage, the fair Elianor of Emberly takes matters into her own hands. Determined none will suffer marriage to the man better known as The Boursier, she sets in motion her plan to imprison him long enough to ensure his barony is forfeited. But when all goes awry and her wrathful enemy compels her to wed him to save his lands, she discovers he is either much changed or much maligned. And the real enemy is one who lurks in their midst. One bent on keeping the feud burning.
