Publisher’s Description:

In this stunning series starter by USA Today bestselling author May McGoldrick, meet the new generation of Penningtons…five brothers and sisters of passion and privilege. Enter their aristocratic world…where each will fight injustice and find love.

Hugh Pennington—Viscount Greysteil, Lord Justice of the Scottish Courts, hero of the Napoleonic wars—is a grieving widower with a death wish. When he receives an expected crate from the continent, he is shocked to find a nearly dead woman inside. Her identity is unknown, and the handful of American coins and the precious diamond sown into her dress only deepen the mystery.

Grace Ware is an enemy to the English crown. Her father, an Irish military commander of Napoleon’s defeated army. Her mother, an exiled Scottish Jacobite. When Grace took shelter in a warehouse, running from her father’s murderers through the harbor alleyways of Antwerp, she never anticipated bad luck to deposit her at the home of an aristocrat in the Scottish Borders. Baronsford is the last place she could expect to find safety, and Grace feigns a loss of memory to buy herself time while she recovers.

Hugh is taken by her beauty, passion, and courage to challenge his beliefs and open his mind. Grace finds in him a wounded man of honor, proud but compassionate. When their duel of wits quickly turns to passion and romance, Grace’s fears begin to dissolve…until danger follows her to the very doors of Baronsford. For, unknown to either of them, Grace has in her possession a secret that will wreak havoc within the British government. Friend and foe are indistinguishable as lethal forces converge to tear the two lovers apart or destroy them both.

My Thoughts:

Spies, intrigue and romance… This well written and stunning beginning of this new series by this husband and wife author team is not to be missed.

Grace Ware is an enemy to the English crown. She unknowingly holds a secret that could have changed the course of the war at the very least and her life without a doubt.
Her talent for absorbing all that she reads or hears makes her a threat to a traitorous group of spies.

Hugh Pennington, Viscount Greysteil, and Lord Justice of the Scottish Courts is a hero of the Napoleonic wars and a grieving widower with a death wish. When his precious new toy, a hot air balloon arrives with a woman, near death nailed into the crate he suddenly has feelings he has no wish for.

After Grace survives it is the Pennington family’s wish for her to reveal herself to them. She decides it is best to pretend amnesia instead since she feels certain her truth could mean her imprisonment or death.

I could not put this book down. Although it is the first in this new series it can very well stand on it’s own.
I gave this book 4.75 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 3.75 of 5.0 flames. The heat between our hero and heroine is a palpable thing.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this title from the publisher via NetGalley to read.
This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

About The Authors:

USA Today Bestselling Authors Nikoo and Jim wrote their first May McGoldrick romance using historical figures that Jim researched while earning a PhD in sixteenth-century Scottish and English literature. Nikoo, a mechanical engineer, is a born storyteller. She is all about characters and feeling. Jim is about action and sense of place. Together, they have crafted over forty fast-paced, conflict-filled historical and contemporary novels and two works of nonfiction under the pseudonyms May McGoldrick and Jan Coffey.

Their stories have touched the hearts and minds of millions of readers all over the world. Their work has been translated into over a dozen languages, and counting. Because of their success, they have been frequent guests on local and national radio and television. They travel regularly, speaking at writers’ conferences, libraries, classrooms, and book group gatherings.

For the past decade, Nikoo and Jim have been conducting workshops bringing 21st century collaboration and writing skills to students and teachers.

These popular and prolific authors write historical romance, suspense, mystery, and young adult novels. They are three-time Rita Finalists and the winners of numerous awards for their writing, including the Romantic Times Magazine Reviewers’ Choice Award, the Daphne DeMaurier Award, three NJRW Golden Leaf Awards, two Holt Medallions, and the Connecticut Press Club Award for Best Fiction. Their work is included in the Popular Culture Library collection of the National Museum of Scotland.

Nikoo and Jim are often asked how they started to write together. Here is Jim’s version…

“When our first son was born, we were looking for a way to support ourselves and not put the baby in daycare, if we could help it. So Nikoo went back to her career in engineering, and I went to graduate school. That way we could take turns at home with the little guy.
We always knew that we were storytellers at heart. So while I was in grad school and had a chance to take a creative writing seminar, I jumped at it. The students wrote stories and then read them to the class. After each story, we’d all give our critique of it.
When I would write my story, Nikoo read it first. Her comments always went something like this. ‘Jim, the prose is beautiful, and the setting and descriptions are pure poetry, the plot is tight, and the action is riveting. But there’s not a single character in here that I give a damn about.’
So I, of course, simply chalked up her final comment to the fact that she was an engineer.
When I went in to read my story to the class, the critique always went like this: ‘Jim, the prose is beautiful, and the description is pure poetry, and the action is riveting. But there’s not a single character in here that I give a damn about.’
So I’d go home and tell Nikoo that they loved it.
Fast forward a few years. I was teaching in a university in Pennsylvania, and I saw a call for submissions for a national writing contest. It occurred to me that one of my stories would be perfect for it. I dug it out, polished it up, but before I could mail it, Nikoo said, ‘Let me read it over.’ She did. And then, with that diplomatic way she has, she looked at me and said, ‘Don’t bother.’
After a brief, more or less civilized discussion, we decided to sit down, side-by-side, and revise the story together. We worked on it for the entire weekend. In the end the story was transformed from a one-dimensional action tale into a story with feeling and depth. We both knew it was better than anything we could have done individually. We sent it off, certain that it was a prize-winner (and it was!).
The ink was not dry on that story when I turned to Nikoo and said, ‘That was cool. What do you want to do next?’ Without a blink of an eye, she said, ‘Let’s write a novel.’
And that’s how it all started.”

Nikoo & Jim now reside in a lakeside community in the northwest corner of Connecticut where Nikoo writes and Jim plays tennis (Nikoo’s side of the story (-: )
Hope you enjoy these few glimpses into their life…

The notorious swordsmen of New Orleans—charming by day, dangerous at night…

They are the pride—and scourge—of New Orleans: a dashing fraternity of master swordsmen whose infamy is matched only by their skill in battle, their allegiance to each other and their passion for the women they love. At ease making life-and-death decisions between breaths, their exploits in the boudoir are as infamous as those on the dueling field.

Bold, seductive and thrilling, the Masters At Arms series is swashbuckling romance at its finest by RWA Hall of Famer—and holder of RWA’s Lifetime Achievement Award and Romantic Times’ Career Achievement Award—Jennifer Blake.

Volume One includes Books 1-3:

When Celina barters herself to Rio de Silva to keep him from dueling her brother, he accepts. But Rio harbors a secret far more perilous than the way he sets her soul aflame.

When the husband she never loved is killed in a duel with Caid O’Neill, Lisette is left at the mercy of her rapacious father-in-law. Caid agrees to be the desperate woman’s protector—but how can they fight the forbidden love between an heiress and a master at arms?

Juliette, called home from a convent just before taking her vows, is in dire need of a husband. Nicholas, notorious swordmaster and mentor to a houseful of street boys, is in need of a wife. Their practical arrangement soon explodes with heady desire, but someone’s trying to stop the wedding, and Juliette must fight to claim a love worth any price.
