The Duke Series, Book Five
Reclusive, cold as ice, the politically powerful Raven, Duke of Ravensmere, denies love after the tragic deaths of his duchess and baby. He is bound by his vow never to allow love to enter his heart again. Samantha Winston permits him to seek refuge in her carriage in a time of need, and what started as a kiss in the name of safety, becomes something more pleasurable and not so safe after all. In spite of every caution, his interest escalates into unexpected desire.
Samantha, a young widow with a secret, irreverent and high-spirited, has constructed impenetrable walls against all men. When she and Raven meet again, strong wills clash. Political intrigues and a dreaded nemesis place his life at risk, and Samantha finds herself in a dire predicament. All the while, passion soars.
Can Samantha’s barriers fall with more kisses? Can Raven be released from his deathbed vow?
This is book #5 of this series but the first one I have read.
Samantha has a secret. Even though she is widowed she is an inexperienced maid.
Raven promised his wife on her deathbed that he would never love another. His loss of his wife and baby has hardened him. After his chance encounter with the lovely Samantha can he possibly hold to this promise made so long ago?
When these two meet, sparks fly. even though their first meeting is caused by the duke’s need for refuge from ruffians who mean him harm. A less than promising beginning makes for an unusual start to this story. .
I read in this author’s editorial review that she had cut this story by 57,000 words, but it is still a long one with a page count: of 452 pages and a word count of: 112,815. This is why I can not rate it higher. It seems drawn out with maybe too much detail.
I think although part of a series, this book can easily be read as a standalone title.
I actually really liked this May – December romance story. The storyline is a good one if maybe too long and the characters are well developed. There is a decidedly heated nature to this book with heated kisses and a couple of very passionate encounters. The cover design is probably not the best as it was not what attracted me to request this book to read.
I gave this book 4.25 of 5 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 3.75 of 5 flames.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from the publisher “The Wild Rose Press” via NetGalley to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this title which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
About The Author:
From a humble beginning in Newark, New Jersey, a short stay at a convent in Morristown, NJ, to the corporate world of NYC, and a fantastic career for a play broadcasting company in Carlsbad, California, Sandra Masters has always traveled with pen and notebook writing her experiences.
She retired to the rural foothills of the Sierras, gateway to Yosemite National Park. It’s been the journey of ten thousand miles with a few steps left to go.
She traded Board Rooms for Ball Rooms. Her business world was left behind, and she never looked back.
Nothing she expected, but everything she dreamed. Her business card shows her occupation as “Living the Dream.” Romance is at best a gift. She hopes you’ll like her voice and passion for writing.
While she also writes contemporaries, her own passion is for Regency England in the early 1800’s. Admittedly, she’d prefer to be the sister of a duke or an earl…perhaps even a princess? Or a widow? Such endless possibilities. Hmm.
Not being able to time travel, she writes about what she loves and hopes you will support her author efforts. She grew up reading fairy tales, and now she writes them!
Sandra lives in Coarsegold, California with her husband, Ron, who is her plotster, and their two dogs, Silky Houdini and Sophie Chiquita. When she’s not writing, she’s busy cooking way too much rustic Italian food for friends and family. She loves bears of all kinds and prefers to collect them in paintings and wood carvings.
Once in a while In the middle of ordinary life LOVE gives us a FAIRY TALE.
