A reimagining of Snow White…
Laire MacLeod’s father has married a mysterious widow who is a vain beauty that deals with potions and spells.
Laire does not drink them with the rest of her family and is the only one who could see through her stepmother’s games.
When Laire flees to find help from her Uncle, the Lady’s huntsman follows her with orders to kill. Laire must survive in a dangerous new city and find the antidote to a poisonous potion before it is too late.
Iain Lindsay is cursed. He is bound for seven years to be the hunter of a Lady who uses him to bring back birds to use in her potions.
When Laire MacLeod escapes the Lady’s nets, Iain tracks her to Edinburgh, where she’s found shelter with an unusual band of thieves, but he cannot bring himself to harm her. Instead, he finds himself falling in love with the MacLeod beauty.
But a Highlander’s oath is his bond, and the price for helping her is death, both his own, and of those he loves.
An evil stepmother who is not what she seems.
A girl who manages to escape her wicked clutches.
We all are familiar with the fairytale. Mirror, mirror on the wall….
This is a well written tale gives us a new, adult take on an old story.
The storyline is well-developed with interesting characters. Unlike the previous books in this series it doesn’t wander on. It is still a lengthy book but not overly so.
Potions, and characters that are veiled by magic and an adult take on a much-loved fairytale.
This new Lecia Cornwall fairytale book is not to be missed.
I gave this book 4.5 of 5 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 3 of 5 flames.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this title which I have reviewed voluntarily.

Logan Ambrose has endured a tortured existence. After learning how to fend for himself at a young age, he eventually amassed power and wealth. His fortune came at an extreme cost, as rising from poverty often does. Branded, he wears his sins on his marred flesh. Each scar represents a past he doesn’t wish to remember, the ruthless man he holds at bay, the tortured soul who would do anything to survive.
Bruised, battered and bloodied, Arabella Sutton is a woman lost. With no recollection of who she is or what terrors she suffered, she stumbles onto the imposing Winterthorne estate running from those who hunt her, haunted by the memory of her bloodied hands holding a blade and wearing a bracelet monogrammed with the initial S.
When she stumbles into Logan’s arms, he recognizes her instantly. She is one of two women he once knew: Arabella or her twin sister, Sybil. One he dared to love years ago, though he now despises them equally. Logan recognizes her bracelet as belonging to Sybil … the last woman he wished to see.
While Arabella must overcome the loss of her memories, she is drawn to the brooding and menacing master of Winterthorne who knows much more about her past than he is willing to admit. Meanwhile, Logan is assailed with memories of his lost love while offering protection to the woman he believes to be her vicious twin, the woman who once reveled in making his life miserable, all the while fighting against the strong attraction that pulls him towards his charge and the reminders of Arabella that she rekindles in his hardened heart.
As Arabella pieces together her past, scandalous secrets come to light and Logan will stop at nothing to save his beloved from the dangerous machinations of her evil identical twin. Together, Logan and Arabella rekindle a romance they long thought extinguished. Meanwhile, they concoct a grand scheme to unmask Sybil and rescue Arabella from her sister’s misdeeds.
Can they protect Arabella from peril and assure their future before it is too late?

A PROPOSAL FROM A SCOUNDREL
Daphne Swift has not laid eyes on her devilishly charming husband, Captain Rafferty Cavendish, in quite some time. As a matter of fact, she wants the rogue to annul their brief marriage so that she can marry the reliable and estimable Lord Fitzwell. But the breathtakingly handsome Rafe is not interested in letting Daphne go-at least not without paying his scandalous price…
THE SEDUCTION OF HIS WIFE
Rafe prefers to face the dangers of spying alone, but this time he needs his innocent, fiery wife to uncover the information he seeks. He has even agreed to release her from their marriage if she submits completely to his plan. However, Daphne’s alluring combination of courage and curves makes her a dangerous distraction, and it is not long before Rafe is trading subterfuge for seduction in order to prove that Daphne is meant to be his and his alone…
I have read almost this whole series and have reviewed all that I have read. To say I loved them is just not enough. Valerie will make you laugh and cry with these wonderfully told stories.
If you read the previous book “The Unlikely Lady” you may remember Daphne Swift’s announcement at the very end that she was married to Captain Rafe Cavendish.
As it turns out, Daphne, who speaks Russian, was asked by her brother Donald to go on a spy mission with Rafe so she could eavesdrop on some Russians and the Russian-speaking French agents they are working for. The only catch: Donald demanded that Rafe marry Daphne supposedly in name only, before they left in case they were discovered. This was to keep Daphne’s reputation secure. So Daphne, disguised as cabin boy Grey, sails off with Rafe on the True Love. She fell head over heels for her husband, but he insisted he thought of her only as a sister.
Now, Daphne asks Rafe for an annulment so she can marry an appropriate man. At the engagement ball Rafe shows up asking for Daphne’s help on a mission to find Donald’s killer. If she goes with him, he’ll give her the annulment. Daphne’s surviving brother, Julian, allows her to go to help get justice for their brother, Donald’s death. This time, though, Rafe’s not sure he wants to give up his wife to someone else so he sends Daphne an engagement present…a miniature of the True Love as a reminder of their recent past. And when Daphne gets too tired of being called perfect…
Well let’s just say you’ll have to read the book to find out!
If you read much regency-era romance and think this storyline is preposterous…it is. As the author says in her note at the end, she’s an entertainer/writer, not a historian. So if you think no nobleman in his right mind would let his high-born little sister dress as a boy to go on missions with spies, you’re of course correct in your thinking. But ignore , in this case what your mind knows and enjoy the story.
These characters are simply delightful. There’s younger cousin Delilah, who is charming and manipulative and thinks she’s totally responsible for the outcome between Rafe and her cousin Daphne. Then there’s Aunt Willie, who immediately spots Rafe in the crowd at the “Engagement Ball” and is rooting for him over the social-climbing potential fiancé and plots with Delilah to make it happen. Delilah deserves her own book and I certainly hope it’s one in the making.
I would give this book 4.75 stars. It is everything that I’ve come to expect from a Valerie Bowman novel.
This book can be read as a standalone, but is much better read as part of the series.
