Publisher’s Description:

Their love was always in the cards.
He should have thrown her out. But when club owner Alexander Lavoie catches a mysterious blonde counting cards at his vingt-et-un table, he’s more intrigued than angry. He has to see more of this beauty-in his club, in his office, in his bed. But first he’ll have to devise a proposition she can’t turn down.

Gossip said he was an assassin. Common sense told her to stay away. But Angelique Archer was desperate, and Lavoie’s club offered a surefire way to make quick money-until she got caught. Instead of throwing her out though, the devil offers her a deal: come work for him. Refusing him means facing starvation, but with a man so sinfully handsome and fiercely protective, keeping things professional might prove impossible . . .

My Thoughts:

Hang onto your hats ladies. This book is one for the ages.
I had never read a Kelly Bowen book before this one, but even though it is apparently book #3 in a series I have no problem recommending it as a standalone title. I will be certain to look into other titles by this new to me author.
The characters are so very interesting and well thought out and the storyline keeps you on your toes. You just have to keep reading to discover what happens next.
The cover is a nice touch and drew me to requesting it as an ARC at NetGalley. The title of the book, however is a bit confusing because the only Dukes involved are really secondary characters in this wonderfully written tale.
I gave this book 4.75 of 5 stars for storyline and characterization and 4 of 5 stars for heat. The underlying physical interest between our hero and heroine are necessary to complete this great book and the intrigue makes the story one not to be missed.
I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher through NetGalley to read and review.
This in no way affected my opinion of this book.

About The Author:

Kelly was born and raised in Manitoba, Canada. She attended the University of Manitoba kelly-bowenwhere she earned a graduate degree in veterinary physiology and spent many years happily working as a research scientist in the agriculture industry. None of which, of course, has anything to do with writing romance novels.

Her writing stemmed from her lifelong obsession with history, a weakness for a good love story and after my first child was born, she sat down to do what she had always wanted to do – write a novel. (The entire process being facilitated by the abundance of winter months that can be found in this particular province).

Currently, she lives in Winnipeg with her husband and two boys who are wonderfully patient and supportive of the writing process. Except, that is, when they need a goalie for street hockey.

Emilie Gallant and her Cajun family have traveled to Louisiana in search of their father, separated thirteen years ago during le grand dérangement, the brutal exile by the British from their Nova Scotia homeland. The last thing Emilie has on her mind as she enters the rugged bayou country is marriage to her longtime companion, Lorenz Dugas. Beautiful but stubbornly defiant, Emilie worshipped Lorenz as a child but having to fight to preserve her family has built a wall around her heart. But Lorenz is equally determined and his passion will prove that their love cannot be denied. As they make their way across the untamed Louisiana wilderness, hoping to reunite the Gallant family, Emilie learns that love has a way of healing all wounds — even in the most unusual places.

“Pick up a copy of Emilie for your reading pleasure, and take a journey into the historical Acadian (Cajun) country of Louisiana for an educational, romantic read.”
—Carol Carter, Romance Reviews Today

“The beauty of Ms. Claire’s tale is in the message that love makes one a stronger and better person. She leaves just enough hints to keep readers eagerly anticipating the next two sisters’ tales. As a history buff, I enjoyed learning about the Acadian (Cajun) culture, as well as the story’s characters.”
—Evelyn Feiner, Romantic Times magazine
