Mary Woodward, a young veteran governess, has one job: guiding a young debutante through her first season in high society. And up until now, keeping her fous and avoiding temptation has been easy. But never before has the father of her young charge been as devilishly handsome as the single, wealthy Earl of Asten…. Convinced to risk it all, Mary let’s herself enjoy one night of magic at a masked ball in Asten’s arms, but will they both regret everything when the Earl learns her true identity?

My Thoughts:
This is book #2 in this delightful trio of novellas about three friends who become governesses and become emotionally and physically entangles with their employers.
I found this book as engaging as the first one “The Governess Was Wicked”. I am certain book #3 will be equally delightful.
I would give this book 4.5 stars four-half-stars-for-brent-weeksand look forward to reading the next one.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this title in exchange for an honest review..

As the visits from the dashing and handsome Doctor Edward Fellows become more frequent, Elizabeth quickly sees through the lovesick girls’ ruse. Yet even Elizabeth can’t help but notice Edward’s bewitching bedside manner even as she tries to convince herself that someone of her station would not make a suitable wife for a doctor. But one little kiss won’t hurt…

“Brenda Hiatt has created a most different and dashing rogue.” ~Kasey Michaels

To escape her stepmother’s matchmaking machinations, Lady Pearl runs away, pretending to be a common housemaid, with the help of her abigail. When she is rescued from the near-disaster of recognition by a charming serving-man, Pearl pretends to be simpleminded to safeguard herself from any unwanted advances. But soon she begins to suspect that her rescuer is far more than the common servant he seemed at first.

Luke St. Clair lives a double life, pretending to be a gentleman while in reality sustaining himself and the needy as the notorious Robin Hood-type thief, the Saint of Seven Dials. The last thing he needs in his life is a beautiful simpleton in need of protection. But “Purdy” proves to be anything but simple—or common! Once he learns the truth, does he dare continue, in the ballrooms of the elite, the flirtation that began in the slums of London? The risk is enormous, but Lady Pearl’s sweet kisses may just be worth it.

From her hiding place on that stormy night, she only sees the murderer’s shoes as he walks by. Isobel’s weakness is shoes. She loves shoes and notices not only everyone’s shoes, but the way they walk as well. And now a pair of shoes is the only clue to what really happened that night.

Lord Conlin de Braose of Sandwich has made an alliance with Laird MacEwen to marry his daughter, Lady Catherine. He’s never met the woman, and little did he know at the time of the agreement that she was known as the Shrew of the Scots. But Conlin has a young daughter he needs to think about since his wife’s death. She needs a mother, and he needs the alliance to protect his lands – and so he must remarry.

But on the day that his betrothed comes overseas to meet him, a storm takes the ship and Conlin rushes to help. The bounty he pulls from the wreckage is a woman – his betrothed’s cousin and proxy – Isobel MacEwen. The woman is beautiful, but seems a bit addled because of her infatuation with shoes! And when Conlin falls in love with the proxy, he realizes he is in a horrible bind.

Can a baron of the Cinque Ports keep his alliance to ensure the safety of his daughter and his people? Or will he risk all and break that alliance to be with the woman he loves?
